Whenever you take your favourite sandwich and make it smaller, it automatically becomes more fun! Perfect party bites that say ‘I am Canadian’ – yet take almost no time at all – try Montreal Smoked Meat Deli Sliders.
All you need is a decent deli, some bite-sized bagels and a bit of fancy mustard. I enjoy the combination of sweet spice and tang against a good Montreal Smoked Meat so I chose to go artisan with the mustard and make my own Apple Mustard starting with my own Apple Butter.
Apple Butter For The Win
Echoing the spice used in making a good quality Montreal smoked meat, I picked up the cinnamon, allspice and clove in the Apple Butter to highlight the deep flavour in the brine and rub that give the meat it’s unique flavorful and aroma. Then it’s as simple as equal parts of smooth & grainy Dijon mustard and you have a wicked taste combination that will make you sing ‘Oh Canada’ (even the French parts).
- Apple Mustard:
In a small bowl combine 2 tablespoons of smooth Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons grainy Dijon mustard and 2 tablespoons of apple butter until smooth.
Best results: look for Montreal Bagles, boiled in honey-water they’re slightly sweeter than their salty New York cousins. Go plain, sesame or poppyseed or, kick it up with mini-everything bagels.
Pairs well with a self-deprecating sense of humour.
